Yan Ran (research and dyeing)- Research on recycling agricultural and forestry pruning materials for manufacture of the natural plant powder pigments

Department of Wood Science and Design, National Pingtung University of Science and Technology

Collecting or harvesting pruned branches from agriculture and forestry to be used as plant dyes can alleviate the difficulties farmers face in managing agricultural and forestry waste. Using the pruned branches of lychee, longan, and loquat grown by farmers in the Taiping District of Taichung City as an example, these materials can be processed into an innovative and distinctive product: plant-based dye powder. This approach not only reduces the carbon footprint associated with refrigerating traditional plant dye liquids and disposing of agricultural and forestry pruned branches but also addresses the issues of dye material storage and the susceptibility of dye liquids to mold and spoilage, thereby expanding their applications. The dye powder offers a quick, convenient, and innovative product to the natural dyeing industry. It can be combined with local vegetation to enrich regional specialties, diversify the colors of the dye powder products, and expand the application scope of plant dye liquids by converting them into powder form. Moreover, the residue from the dyeing process can be repurposed into paper for packaging, promoting sustainability and providing consumers with natural and harmless dye products. By choosing this product, consumers can contribute to environmental conservation. The raw materials used in this product align with the circular economy goals of SDG 12.5, ensuring the highest value utilization of agricultural and forestry pruned branches across various regions.
