Mud dyeing is a dyeing technique—an ancient method that takes from nature and returns to it. Sustainability is not only about environmental responsibility—it is also about cultural memory and the continuation of tradition. Centered on the practice of mud dyeing, this project explores the colors and characteristics of Taiwan’s diverse soils, delving into traditional craftsmanship, emotional connections to the land, and the continuation of endangered knowledge.

The book is structured around five colors—ash gray, indigo, vermilion, persimmon, and brown. Each chapter highlights a different aspect: interviews with veteran artisans, technique transmission, pattern design, cultural and creative applications, and the spirit of craftsmanship. Richly illustrated, the book is designed to be visually engaging and accessible to readers of all ages. Each chapter also includes fabric and soil swatches to create a multi-sensory experience of both sight and touch. The book cover is made from hand-dyed mud-dye fabric, preserving natural creases and dye patterns—making each copy a one-of-a-kind collectible and an inviting introduction to the world of mud dyeing.

The completed work comes with four different cover colors. Detailed images of the book’s exterior showcase the preserved wrinkle textures from the dyeing process. Each chapter includes actual dyed fabric samples and corresponding soil color swatches. The techniques and stories are visualized, making the content accessible to a general audience. Swiss binding method, lays flat for easy reading. The peripheral material is a tri-fold leaflet.

Find Someone to Love Me

Department of Arts and Design, National Taipei University of Education

This work is based on the theme of Yue Lao, combining traditional beliefs to create something that can stay with single people and fit into daily life. Yue Lao is a popular and friendly god. In the work, the "single dog" represents people looking for love. The scene of praying to Yue Lao is shown in a cute and funny way.
