Even if family members live in different places, their bond will never break.
Even if family members live in different places, their bond will never break.
Hair used to be a boundary between power and faith: cut, grown, and disciplined. As a carrier of culture and discipline, could hair open dialogues of inclusion, conflict, and even reflection? Taking the Ming dynasty’s Bun and the Qing dynasty’s Braid (as enforced through the policy of The Queue and Manchu Clothing) as an example: during a time of political upheaval, if an individual were to retain both hairstyling symbols simultaneously, what kind of cultural identity or stance would they represent? What kind of demeanor would emerge from such a combination? Could this very act of overlap be seen as a visualization of disciplinary boundaries gradually losing their clarity? “彡” (shān) is an organization that explores alternative perspectives and imaginations on hair. When boundaries dissolve, could we further embrace diversity? This project merges diverse hairstyling cultures through an alternative historical perspective, and explores the possibilities of hair under new forms of discipline.
