As time progresses, modern people are becoming increasingly unfamiliar with traditional Chinese medicinal herbs. For many, their only brief encounter with these herbs occurs through herbal cuisine, leaving them with limited understanding of their scents, characteristics, and cultural significance. Therefore, this project aims to reintroduce medicinal herbs to the public through a “sensory-guided” approach, allowing these once unfamiliar materials to be experienced in a more interactive and approachable way that connects with everyday life. The sensory experience is mainly divided into two aspects: “olfaction” and “visual perception.” In the olfactory experience, we use scent jars as a medium, allowing participants to identify different medicinal herbs through their unique aromas and experience their natural fragrances and individual characteristics. In terms of visual design, each herb is paired with its own exclusive color palette, systematically organizing the imagery and colors of the herbs so that viewers can deepen their impressions and understanding through visual association and color recognition. In addition to the sensory experience, we also incorporate informative materials to help the public further understand the names and characteristics of traditional Chinese medicinal herbs throughout the interactive experience. Through the combination of smell and visual perception, we hope to bridge the gap between modern audiences and traditional medicinal herbs, allowing this cultural knowledge to be reintegrated into contemporary life in a more innovative and accessible way.
