Rebirth of Rattan

Department of Industrial Design, Tunghai University

Rattan furniture was once a ubiquitous household item in early Taiwan, deeply woven into the fabric of our memories. However, it has gradually declined amidst the tides of industrial technology and shifting fashion trends. Traditional rattan furniture involves intricate techniques such as bending, knotting, and weaving, making each piece unique but difficult to mass-produce and pass down. Inspired by this traditional craft, "Rebirth of Rattan" aims to reinterpret fading rattan furniture using modern industrial methods, creating contemporary rattan pieces. Through Rebirth of Rattan, we hope to evoke cherished memories and continue the beautiful traditions and craftsmanship in a modern form.
